Friday, 9 September 2011: Group Workouts

I overheard someone say the other day that they can't get a good workout in a group setting. I think I wanted to slap them right there on the spot and say, "Obviously you're doing it wrong." I used to have that mentality, but that was because I was uneducated on fitness. I didn't know what a good workout consisted of or even how to program a good workout. Now I know better.

Most people believe they know what a good workout consists of. Just like most people believe they know how to run. You just do some work until you break a sweat, then you stop. Unfortunately it's not that simple. If it was, then everyone would be doing it and everyone would be lean and fit. Obviously that's not the case. Getting a good workout is hard, that's why most people don't do it. Once it starts to hurt, people start to cheat--not doing the reps, not getting full range of motion, or just simply quitting. That's the problem with people not getting a good workout in group settings, they quit when it gets hard. We CrossFitters know that when it starts to hurt, we have to push through it so the next time it's easier.

We CrossFitters know that the best workouts are done in group settings. Memorial Day Murph, 31 Heroes, 9/11 Throwdown, Fight Gone Bad, even the daily WOD. We get energized from our fellow CrossFitter WODing next to us. A solo WOD is a lonely experience and we try to avoid it as much as possible. We thrive with those that are willing to suffer with us. We feed off of each other's energy. And we push through the workout together. I don't know about you, but my best performances have always been in a group setting. If yours haven't, then you're doing it wrong.

WOD:
Gymnastics at Armory Gymnastics
- Front Tucks
- Front Handsprings
- Back Handsprings
- Back Tucks
- Back Levers
- Handstand Walks
- and other gymnastic-y stuff

  1. And I laughed my ass off picturing you slaping someone.

  2. I have to shake my head and wonder why people continue going through the motions of something when it's not yielding results. Obviously the way you've been doing it isn't working. But they are so reluctant to try something new. Sad.
