When I first got into CrossFit, I liked the fact that you really didn't need much to do it. We CrossFitters take pride that our boxes are bare-bone gyms with little in them except barbells, bumpers, kettlebells, and pull up bars. But I've noticed a trend of continually increasing CrossFit "gear." Now CrossFitters are buying minimalist shoes, olympic weightlifting shoes, Chuck Taylors, grips, jump ropes, Abmats, any and all new gear they can get their hands on that other CrossFitters are wearing/using. Do you really need all that? What happened to just doing the WOD and not worrying if I had the right shoes to do it? I've seen some CrossFitters that have Inov-8 parkour shoes, Inov-8 running shoes, Chuck Taylors, and weightlifting shoes. Really? Do you really need all those shoes?
I have to admit that I'm somewhat guilty of this trend too. I have Inov-8 running shoes and weightlifting shoes. I also have my own Abmat, jumprope, grips, bands, weight vest, and 2 pood kettlebell (that's because some gyms don't carry 2 pood kettlebells). Do I really need all that equipment? And does it make me a better CrossFitter by having all this gear? Absolutely not. Don't trick yourself into believing that you need all this extra stuff to be a better CrossFitter. All you need is heart. Heart will make you a better CrossFitter. If you show up to the gym without it, you'll notice it in your results. Even more so than doing snatches in running shoes versus weightlifting shoes. Because if you really want to nail that snatch, it takes heart to tackle it and not what's on your feet.
Heart. Don't leave home without it.
