Monday, 25 July 2011: "Can't" Is Not a Word in My Vocabulary

"Can't" is not a word in my vocabulary and it shouldn't be in yours. Saying "I can't" is equivalent to saying "I won't". Try it a few times and you'll see:

I can't lift that weight vs. I won't lift that weight.
I can't do pull ups without a band vs. I won't do pull ups without a band.
I can't get that promotion vs. I won't get that promotion.
I can't leave work early to spend time with the family vs. I won't leave work early to spend time with the family.

Those that use the word "can't" have already convinced themselves that they will fail and that any attempt will be futile. Instead of thinking of how they will celebrate, they're coming up with excuses of why they couldn't accomplish the task. No more excuses! How do you know you'll succeed if you don't at least try? So what if your attempt failed? Not everything in life goes exactly as we planned, but at least we learn from our experiences. We grow. We get better. We try again. But if we don't at least attempt it, we'll miss 100% of the shots we don't take.
