Tuesday, 30 August 2011: Coaching Points

Every day presents you with opportunities to coach someone. How you approach and deliver these coaching points to your students determines whether they make a change for the better or just disregard your help. Do you tell them what they did wrong, show them the correct way of doing it, and then complimented them on an aspect of the movement they did really well? If you're not ending on a good note, you're just providing negative reinforcement. ALWAYS end on a positive note.

Delivery of your message is also very important. Do you pull them aside and address them individually or do you call them out in front of everyone? It really depends on the person you're critiquing. If they have thick skin, they probably won't mind getting called out. If they don't, do you know that they don't like getting called out? Learn about your athletes. That'll definitely help you in delivering your coaching points.

We're all learning, so make sure you don't come across as a know-it-all either. Athletes look to their coach for guidance and sometimes coaches look to their athletes for inspiration. We're all in this together, so let's get the most out of these coaching points.
